PlayStation VR 2: Hardware

The PSVR 2 is a considerable upgrade from the original PSVR headset. It features new controllers, a wider field of view (FoV), in-built inside-out tracking, and higher resolution. However, it is not a standalone VR headset, as it will take advantage of the PS5’s powerful hardware to run VR games.

PSVR 2: Visual Fidelity/Display

The PSVR 2 visuals have received a massive upgrade due to the HDR OLED display with a max resolution of 4000 X 2040 pixels (2000 X 2040 per eye). This upgrade increases the visual fidelity of the headset to 4K resolution. The only other mainstream VR headset that comes close to such high resolution is the Pico 4. For more information, check out our comparison of the PSVR 2 vs Meta Quest 2 and Pico 4.

The headset also has a 110-degree FoV, foveated rendering, and a max refresh rate of 120Hz. PSVR 2 also has an eye-tracking feature that can be used to interact with in-game options and browse menus. It also helps in foveated rendering, which boosts resolution where the wearer is looking and reduces image quality in peripheral vision.

PSVR 2: Inside-Out Tracking and Passthrough Cameras

The most significant upgrade for the PSVR 2 is the inside-out tracking that uses the four external cameras. These cameras track the headset along with the controller. However, these cameras will not be able to track the PSVR 2 controllers once out of their 90-degree field of view or behind their head.

Users will have a wide area of movement compared to the previous generation, but they will still need to be tethered to the PS5. The headset also combines features like eye tracking, controller haptic feedback, headset vibration, and 3D audio for better immersion.

The four external cameras also provide a passthrough mode that lets users see their surroundings in black and white. Users can switch between VR and passthrough vision by pressing a button on the bottom right of the PSVR 2.

PSVR 2: Controllers and Headset

The PSVR 2 controllers are similar to other PC VR controllers. Each controller has a thumbstick, two primary input buttons, a PlayStation, and an options button. The R2 and L2 buttons act as the trigger, whereas the L1 and R1 rest are placed underneath the middle finger and are used for gripping items.

The controllers also feature haptic feedback and adaptive triggers like the PS5 DualSense controllers. These controllers are also equipped with an infrared ring that helps the headset track the controllers, similar to the Quest 2 controllers. However, unlike other VR controllers, they have a built-in rechargeable battery.

The PSVR 2 headset also has an adjustable strap that can freely adjust to the shape of your head. There’s also a button on the facemask that lets users slide the head strap closer and farther from the display. Users can also fit their glasses inside the facemask and adjust the focus of the lenses by using the dial in the top-left corner of the unit.

Unfortunately, the headset doesn’t come with integrated speakers, unlike the Meta Quest 2. Instead, the headset comes with PlayStation Pulse 3D headphones. Unfortunately, using the headset and speaker in combination can be a bit cumbersome.
