With Half The Cost of Tesla Model Y, This Electric SUV Aims To Dominate In China
Tesla Model Y deliveries have already started in China but there lies a big challenge ahead. China is one country where Tesla is going to have the toughest competition. The 2020 Xpeng G3 has everything you need to call it the perfect Tesla Model Y killer at a cost of less than half of Model Y.
The G3 is an electric crossover SUV from the Chinese startup Xpeng. The EV is the first production car from the startup and was officially launched in 2018. The compact SUV is also the predecessor of the much anticipated Xpeng P7.
Initially, the G3 did not have jaw-dropping specs during its launch. However, the latest 2020 iteration of the crossover has made some significant improvements, making it eligible to become a Tesla Model Y competitor.
Here’s everything that you need to know about the latest variant of Xpeng G3.

The Xpeng G3 electric SUV derives its electric charge from a 66.5kWh battery pack. Moreover, the EV has a top speed of 170 km/h and a 323-mile range in the base model of the long-range variant. The Xpeng G3 costs RMB 159,800 which is equivalent to around $22,500 or a little more than half of the cost of Tesla Model Y.
In contrast, the Model Y has an estimated EPA range of 316 miles, which is less than what the Xpeng G3 offers. But the range based on the EPA cycle is more accurate to real-world figures, so Tesla wins here. Also, Model Y has a Level 3 Autonomous driving system. And finally, when it comes to performance, Model Y can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds and Xpeng G3 can’t.
If we notice closely then Model Y will lead G3 in almost every aspect but the difference is not very significant. However, when it comes to the price of the Tesla Model Y, it’s almost twice that of Xpeng G3.
Will People Prefer Xpeng G3 Over Tesla Model Y In China?
The biggest advantage the Xpeng G3 electric SUV has over the Model Y is its affordable price tag. Tesla claims that the Model Y is an affordable electric SUV, and considering the equipment it has on offer, it really is.
But the deal the Xpeng G3 provides, at least due to its price range, has a broader mass appeal than the Model Y.
The Tesla Model Y is surely an excellent electric SUV in almost every aspect. However, the question is, are consumers, especially in China, ready to pay a massive price difference for perfection?
