Hogwarts Legacy & Forspoken Will Have Denuvo DRM
Hogwarts Legacy has recently updated its Steam page to reveal that the game will feature Denuvo Anti-Tampering DRM. Then there’s also Forspoken, another highly anticipated game that has also added Denuvo. The Steam page for Hogwarts Legacy was updated just weeks before its official release to avoid player backlash.
It is not the first time that developers have purposefully waited until the last moment to reveal that their game will have Denuvo at launch. Last year games like Callisto Protocol, NFS Unbound, Valkyrie Elysium, Gotham Knights, and Sonic Frontiers also added Denuvo at the last moment.
In the case of Gotham Knights, another game from Warner Bros., just like Hogwarts Legacy, the Denuvo tag was added just days before its launch. Historically, this news isn’t surprising as all Warner Bros and Square Enix games have featured Denuvo in the past.
How does Denuvo Impact Hogwarts Legacy & Forspoken?
Denuvo and other DRM systems like itself prevent a game from being pirated. However, they also negatively impact a game’s performance. These performance issues can vary from long load times to FPS drops, micro-stutters, and more.
A good gaming PC can undoubtedly compensate for the FPS drops, but the game might become unplayable on a low-end PC. Denuvo can also create an always-online requirement for Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken, which can be inconvenient for some players.
Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken already have a demanding high-spec gaming PC requirement. So one can only assume how well the game will run on older PCs in combination with Denuvo. This change might not affect many gamers, but it makes one think twice about picking up the games.
Gamers have been skeptical about both games leading up to their release. Forspoken has already received mixed reviews during its demo period on the PS5. It should also be noted that Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken have already been delayed multiple times.
Hogwarts Legacy has also been keeping a low profile and not showing much of the game even close to its release. This kind of discretion is usually a red flag in the gaming industry. However, we sincerely hope both games can match players’ expectations and take their place as some of the best games of 2023.
