Porsche’s Tesla Model Y Killer Could Be A Taycan Sports Turismo
Porsche Taycan Turbo Sports Turismo could be a Tesla Model Y killer for the German automaker. The Taycan Sports Turismo is Porsche’s upcoming electric car/sports wagon which competes in the compact SUV market.
The Porsche Sports Turismo EV is based on a similar Mission E platform as the Taycan electric 4-door sedan. The electric sports wagon was first showcased during the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
Since then, the upcoming electric car has evolved from a concept to an almost production-ready vehicle. Very recently, the Tesla Model Y killer was in spotted winter testing completely undisguised.
It was also spotted earlier, testing at Nurburgring along with the Taycan Turbo sedan.
Here’s what we know about the Porsche Taycan Sports Turismo.
Porsche Taycan Sports Turismo: Tesla Model Y Killer?
Well, not exactly. The price range of the Porsche Taycan Sports Turismo will be way higher than the Model Y. It will, however, spawn several lower-trim models which could find a way to compete with the top-sped Model Y in the future.
Talking about the design of the Sports Turismo electric car, it looks longer and a bit wider than the Porsche Taycan. It also features a swooped up rear end with huge cargo space and in turn a higher ride height.
The spied model lacks the panoramic roof from the Mission E cross concept model. Moreover, it features wheels from the less expensive Porsche Taycan 4S.
The front end of both Porsche electric cars is exactly the same, which isn’t a bad thing. Taycan is aerodynamic and despite what the EPA rating might say, it is quite efficient as well.
Speaking of efficiency, just like the Taycan, the Porsche Sports Turismo EV will come with a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery with 800v for super-fast charging. The Tesla Model Y in its top-spec houses a 74 kWh battery, which gives the SUV an EPA range of 315 miles.
In a 2018 interview, Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Porsche’s VP of the battery-electric program, confirmed that the Mission E cross concept will have more than 300 miles of range.
I still doubt this claim, considering Taycan’s efficiency numbers which have the same battery and are smaller than Sports Turismo EV. But I am more than willing to see how Porsche pulls it off.
In terms of performance, the Porsche Sports Turismo EV will go from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds — which is similar to the figures a Model Y Performance version pulls.
Dr. Stefan promised that the production version will have more than 600 HP and a weight of 500 kg or 1,100 pounds less than the prototype version.
Porsche Taking Electrification Seriously
Porsche has several electric vehicles in the form of PHEVs and hybrids. However, with the Porsche Taycan, the company took a bold step to officially enter the EV market.
The move proved a boon for Porsche as well. Porsche Taycan has received several critical claims and is already faster in terms of performance than its arch-rival, the Tesla Model S.
Therefore, the upcoming Taycan Sports Turismo electric car seems like a natural step in Porsche’s path towards electrification. And probably towards huge profits as well.
