Capcom Has Plans To Make PC Its Main Platform In Coming Years
According to Capcom’s COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company is planning to switch to making PC software in the future. As reported by VGC, while talking to Japanese publication Nikkei, the executive said they’re planning to “mainly focus on PC software.”
Capcom, the developer and publisher behind games like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Devil May Cry, says that “PC is driving global sales.” “We have recently stated that we will make the PC our main platform. At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, we focused on exhibiting the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, and I think people will be able to experience the change in our approach,” Tsujimoto said.
Furthermore, Tsujimoto thinks since PC is driving global sales, “PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones.” The COO also revealed that Capcom’s future PC software plans are in reaction to a significant increase in digital copies of the company’s games. Haruhiro Tsujimoto said, “Resident Evil 7 still sells over one million copies per year.”`
He further went on to say, “The pandemic is changing the way people look at PCs. Smartphones are convenient, but their screens are small, and their touch panels are difficult to operate on, so they are not suitable for home working or school classes. I think PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones.”
PC gaming’s future
However, console users still have a significant lead over gaming PC users, and the situation could become balanced in the next couple of years. The above statement could very well turn into a reality since PC hardware has become more capable of running high-quality AAA titles. Meanwhile, the global chip shortage has not only impacted console sales; but the supply of PC hardware also took a massive blow. The global chip shortage could likely run well into next year, hitting hard on graphics card availability.
“We will expand our business for dedicated game consoles, which has been mainstream up to now, but PC will be the mainstream in the future. Next year or the year after, we want to equalize the ratio of sales to PCs and dedicated consoles,” said Tsujimoto. While Capcom has mainly focused its attention on console gaming, it has seen significant profits in the PC gaming scene in recent years.
