Did iOS 12.1 Fix iPhone Xs BeautyGate Issue? Here Are The Results

Apple rolled out iOS 12.1 bringing a couple of features that were already announced. Some of the notable features are Group FaceTime, dual-SIM capabilities, over 70 new emojis and real-time depth control in portrait mode.

However, what most iPhone Xs and Xs Max users wanted from the update was the fix for the artificial skin smoothening filter that is automatically applied on selfies. The ‘bug’ dubbed as ‘BeautyGate’ was acknowledged by the Apple after many users complained.

Apple said that the newly introduced Smart HDR feature is causing the issue. The feature is choosing the wrong base frame for the final image resulting in excess skin smoothening and noise reduction.

Now that Apple has released iOS 12.1, does it fix the BeautyGate issue? We clicked some selfies to check from our iPhone Xs. Here are the results —

As you would notice, the results are hardly noticeable. There are slight differences, but the issue is persistent. Images are still far away from the reality, and there is an excess of skin smoothening even after the update.

Apple’s iOS 12.1 release note read, “Fixes an issue where the sharpest reference frame was not always selected in front-facing photos for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.”
