Updated 24th October – Microsoft acknowledges the “Overwrite confirmation dialog box missing” bug
Today, Microsoft addresses the Windows 10 October Update Bug which does not prompt the “Do you want to replace these files” dialog box when copying files from a ZIP file.
- Copying from a compressed (.zip) folder to a regular folder.
- Moving from a compressed folder to a regular folder.
- Copying from a compressed folder to a protected folder.”
In a Microsoft Forum, the company asks you to fully extract the zip folder before you copy files to a new destination folder to avoid this issue.
Original Story – Windows 10 October Update Once Again Plagued By Another File Management Bug
Since the announcement of Windows 10 October update 2018, things have been going pretty bad for Windows users. At first, it was the file deletion which caused a lot of inconvenience to Windows users, and later the driver issues.
Now, people have come across another Windows 1809 bug which appears to be another File Explorer issue. Several users on Reddit and Ask Woody have reported an unusual activity while extracting files.
The primary issue revolves around the Overwrite prompt which does not appear when you copy or move files from a ZIP file, to another folder which has files of the exact same name.
A Reddit user explained, “The issue is that in 1809, overwriting files by extracting from an archive using File Explorer doesn’t result in an overwrite prompt dialogue and also doesn’t replace any files at all; it just fails silently.”
People on Ask Woody have also reported the same File Explorer bug. They discovered that the version 1809 bug is re-writing the files, without showcasing explicit permission.
One user reported that if someone tries to delete the archive file believing that the files have been copied, it will lead to another data loss scenario.
Users haven’t found any problems with 3rd-party apps like WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip. So if you are facing the above issue, you can try out trial-versions for the time being.
Microsoft is readily sending bug fixes in the form of cumulative updates now and then. So, we might expect a bug fix soon enough. As for the people who have rolled back to the previous Windows 10 version, the company will soon release a new October Update in a few weeks.
