Sony Launches PlayStation Portal In India: How Does It Work?
It’s safe to say that Sony already has the best console on the market, the PS5. But as much as people love the console, there are times when you want to take this experience out of the living room and play your favorite games in the bedroom or at the dining table. Fortunately, Sony has listened to our requests and finally launched the PlayStation Portal in India. Here is everything you need to know about it!
How does the PlayStation Portal work?
When you look at the PlayStation Portal, you might assume that it is another handheld console with an 8-inch 1080p LCD, similar to the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally. However, this is not the case. Consoles like the Steam Deck are essentially PCs packed inside a small chassis containing a processor, GPU, RAM, and all the necessary components.
While this configuration works well for many games, packing the capabilities of a PS5 into a handheld device is simply not possible. Therefore, the PS Portal uses Sony’s famous Remote Play system, which has already allowed users to stream their PS5 games on other devices for several years.
But, considering that you can stream to any device, you might wonder what the PS5 Portal is for. The answer is optimization. Historically, people using the Remote Play functionality have complained about lags or stutters caused by various factors.
The PS Portal claims to fix all these issues by optimizing the device to handle PS5 gameplay. All you need to do is power on your PS5 and ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that’s it! Your Portal automatically connects to the PS5, and you can access your entire library of games. The DualSense wireless controllers attached to the Portal enhance the experience by providing the same haptic feedback and immersion. However, note that Sony recommends using a high-speed wired or 5GHz wireless connection to ensure smooth gameplay.

Starting at Rs. 18,990, the PlayStation Portal will be available on Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, Sony Centers, and other online stores from August 3.
