Following the rumored attempts being made by Broadcom to acquire Qualcomm for a whopping $130 billion, another news from the world of silicon is here to surprise us. Intel has announced that it’s working with AMD to launch a new series of processors.

In its announcement, Intel called it an opportunity to create a thinner, lighter, and more powerful product that can deliver a premium experience. The new chip would be a part of Intel’s current 8th Gen Core family. It’ll be a combined package of Intel’s high-performance Core H-series processors and custom-to-Intel AMD Radeon GPU.

This product will be created using Intel’s Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB) technology, which allows information to be passed in a fast manner in extremely close proximity. It’ll also feature Intel’s latest high-bandwidth memory, i.e., HBM2.

It’s worth noting that Intel and AMD have collaborated for the first time since the ’80s, according to The Wall Street Journal.

But, why are these two arch-rivals working together?

The reason behind this move could be speculated as big strides being made by Nvidia, which has become a primary competitor of Intel. With its solutions for AI and machine learning, Nvidia is turning out to be much more than a GPU-maker.

On the other hand, AMD has been able to leave some marks in the GPU market with its latest lineup. With this new partnership, the users and OEMs can get rid of a standalone graphics card and save space.

“Our collaboration with Intel expands the installed base for AMD Radeon GPUs and brings to market a differentiated solution for high-performance graphics,” said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager, AMD Radeon Technologies Group.
