OnePlus 6’s Face Unlock Can Be Fooled By A Photograph
Do you own a OnePlus 6 or planning to buy one? If yes, you might want to read this one. So apparently, the OnePlus 6’s face unlock method can be tricked by a photograph.
A video posted by a Twitter user, shows the phone getting unlocked by a cutout picture of his face. What makes it worse is that this trick works even if the photo is black and white.
I printed my face to unlock my OnePlus 6 for the lulz… it worked ¯_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/rAVMq8JKBr

However, one should view this clip with a grain of salt as it does not show the OnePlus 6 during the unlocking process. It could be possible that his friend deceived the viewers and used his face to unlock the device. He may have registered his face on the device earlier.
Facial recognition-based unlocking was introduced by Apple but ever since then, every mobile manufacturer has joined the race to dish out this feature. But unlike Apple, the rest of them do not provide additional hardware to support the feature and mostly rely on the front-facing camera resulting in an inadequate level of security.
OnePlus has responded to this video and issued a statement to Phone Arena:
“We designed Face Unlock around convenience, and while we took corresponding measures to optimize its security we always recommended you use a password/PIN/fingerprint for security. For this reason, Face Unlock is not enabled for any secure apps such as banking or payments. We’re constantly working to improve all of our technology, including Face Unlock.”
This statement implies that OnePlus’s Face Unlock technology is still not up to the mark. So for now, one should stick to the fingerprint unlock which is a more secure method for phones.
