Elon Musk Has Finished Building World’s Largest Li-Ion Battery, Wins Bet

It turns out, a man who aims to put people on Mars doesn’t say things just like that. In July, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a bet on Twitter to the Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes that he could give Australia a 100MW Li-ion battery in just 100 days.

Tesla has created the world’s largest battery (in days counting since September 29) and it’s deployed just outside the Australian city of Jamestown, according to an announcement made by the South Australian government on Friday.

The mega battery project was first announced by the government in March this year. Later, the contract was awarded to Tesla and French company Neoen.

The battery has come into existence as a backup option for frequent power outages in South Australia. The 100MW battery has enough juice to power around 30,000 homes required.

The Li-ion battery, which comprises of Tesla Powerpacks, would take a few days to get charged by taking power from the nearby Hoarnsdale windfarm operated by Neoen. The official inaugural is due next week.

It’s not the first time that Tesla has took battery projects to help power deprived regions. Last year, in November, the another Elon Musk-founded company SolarCity (owned by Tesla) completed a rather small 1.4MW solar microgrid to provide power to 600 residents in the Island of Ta’u located in the Pacific ocean.
