In the post-pandemic era, it’s no surprise that monitoring health metrics has become a crucial aspect of everyday life. While many turn to smartwatches from Apple and Samsung for this purpose, a significant number are still dissuaded by the aesthetics and the fact that these devices replace traditional watches. To address this, Samsung is working on the smart Galaxy Ring, which integrates all the health sensors found in smartwatches. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

How does the Samsung Galaxy Ring work?

Similar in concept to the Oura ring, the Galaxy Ring aims to simplify health tracking by eliminating the need for a daily smartwatch. While not officially confirmed, the device will offer ECG functionality and blood flow measurement for monitoring heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

However, to make these metrics easier to understand, Samsung is developing the My Vitality Score metric. This feature will provide personalized insights based on various health metrics tracked by the ring.

Considering users are likely to wear the ring during sleep, the Samsung Health app will reportedly include features for monitoring sleep patterns and detecting changes in blood oxygen levels, helping identify potential sleep apnea symptoms.

Finally, the smart ring is also speculated to support device control through Samsung SmartThings and enable wireless payments via Samsung Pay.

A new AI coach

Samsung plans to integrate some form of an AI coach into the Galaxy Ring. During recent discussions, Samsung executive Hon Pak highlighted that the company will use AI to analyze the extensive data collected by these devices and provide more insights. However, the potential requirement for a subscription and the ability of the AI to access your health data raise significant privacy concerns. As a result, the company will need to ensure that the AI is safe and secure

Sizes and compatibility

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Ring will be available in nine sizes ranging from five to 13 and three colors: black, silver, and gold. Talking about the weight, the device weighs only 2.9 grams, which is less than half of the Oura Ring 3.

However, it is important to note that the ring is unlikely to be compatible with iOS, as Samsung’s Hon Pak expressed a desire for the device to be exclusive to Android.

Availability and Pricing

While the official launch date and pricing details are still unclear, the company could release the device in July 2023, with an anticipated price ranging between $300 and $400.
