If we take a look at the numbers, Apple’s OS X and Linux stand nowhere when compared to Windows PCs. However, these operating systems are favorite among developers who spend their day and night in front of computer screens to make and break new things.

Putting it in another way, the usage of GNU/Linux is declining among the programmers.

Well, if we combine Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows XP and Windows Vista, Windows is still the most popular development environment. If we break this down, 22.5 percent coders use Windows 7, 20.8 percent use Windows 10, and 8.4 percent use Windows 8.

Two years ago, Linux distributions were the second most popular choice among the programmers. According to this year’s trends, Ubuntu is far ahead of other open source distros with a market share of 12.3 percent. Canonical’s OS is followed by Fedora, Mint, and Debian that accounted for 1.4%, 1.7%, and 1.9% of all responses, respectively.
