Apple’s switch to its custom silicon is now one step closer with the launch of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. These two new chips are combined with two new MacBooks in 14 and 16-inch sizes. It means you can now choose from 3 MacBook Pros with 3 different chips.

The new MacBook Pros mean serious business and that can be seen in the specifications. Apple has brought out the big guns and revised some of its past mistakes and giving it a new quirk. Both the new MacBook Pros get rid of the Touch Bar for the function keys, and also bring back the MagSafe connector with fast charging. Coming to the quirk, the new MacBook Pros now have a notch.

Apple says the display design and macOS Monterey will make full use of the screen real-estate, cleverly hiding the notch in the top menu bar. While it looks cool, it still misses out on Face ID which could’ve been fitted in the notch area.

Both 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro also feature a full-size HDMI port, two thunderbolt ports, a high-fidelity earphone jack, and an SD card reader. This I/O is not there just for the sake of it. The M1 Max MacBook Pros can connect with up to 4 displays and still have ports left for the SD card and headphones.

With this, only the 24-inch iMac and the outrageously expensive Mac Pro are the only Intel Macs left in the lineup. While Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger hopes Intel Macs to make a comeback and maybe sell alongside the Apple silicon Macs, the current evolution of the M series chip and the new MacBook Pros makes that transition more difficult.
