Everything About Samsung Galaxy S24 Series: Release Date, Specifications, Camera, Pricing
After the discontinuation of the Note phones, Samsung’s S series has become the de facto Android flagship, giving users a solid all-round smartphone with stable software and reliable cameras. Now, with Samsung settling into its design philosophy, expectations are high for the upcoming S24 series, which is rumored to introduce significant changes. Here’s what we know so far.
When will the S24 series launch?
Recent reports suggest Samsung will officially launch the S24 series on January 17th, though the company hasn’t confirmed this date yet.
Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Design and Display
Following its predecessor’s approach, the S24 series will comprise three variants: the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. Additionally, each variant retains the design with three/four cameras protruding individually from the frame.
But reports indicate that the S24 series will adopt squared edges akin to iPhones, moving away from curved screens. As for dimensions, the S24 will be slightly taller and slimmer than its predecessor, measuring approximately 147 x 70.5 x 7.6 mm. However, both the S24+ and S24 Ultra are expected to maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors.
Moving to the front, all three phones will include the center punch-hole selfie camera, with the S24 Ultra featuring even slimmer bezels, as indicated by the real-life images. In terms of displays, the S24 and S24 Ultra will retain their 6.2″ FullHD+ 120Hz screen and 6.8″ QHD+ 120Hz screen, respectively. Meanwhile, the S24+ will feature a larger 6.7″ QHD+ 120Hz display.
However, perhaps the biggest talking point about the S24 Ultra’s design is the new material. This is because while the S24 and S24+ are rumored to have aluminum frames, the S24 Ultra will house a titanium frame, similar to the iPhone’s build.
Complimenting the titanium frame, Samsung plans to introduce four new color options for the S24 Ultra: Titanium Black, Titanium Gray, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow. Conversely, the regular models will offer familiar color variants like Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow.
Specifications
Traditionally, Samsung’s flagship phones used different processors for various regions. However, everything changed last year when the company included the Snapdragon processor globally. This trend will continue with the S24+ and S24 Ultra, which houses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, coupled with 8GB to 12GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage for the Ultra variant.
Coming to the regular S24, rumors suggest a potential return to Exynos chips for specific regions. Speculations indicate that the smaller S24 model might use Samsung’s Exynos 2400, particularly in European markets.
Furthermore, in terms of connectivity, both the S24+ and the S24 Ultra will feature the new Wi-Fi 7 standard. However, the regular S24 will support Wi-Fi 6E.
Cameras
The Samsung S line has always included reliable cameras, which capture balanced photos in almost all scenarios. The S24 series is looking to continue this trend, especially with the reported incorporation of a 200MP 1-inch main camera in the S24 Ultra, thus marking a significant upgrade. Additionally, big changes are anticipated in the other lenses as well. This is because rumors suggest the S24 Ultra might replace its predecessor’s 10x telephoto camera with a 50MP 5x telephoto sensor, alongside a 10MP 3x telephoto camera and a 12MP ultrawide sensor.
Moving to the regular models, both the S24 and the S24+ will feature a similar triple-camera setup, comprising a 50MP primary lens, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Software
While OneUI has gradually settled into its design philosophy, major changes could occur with the S24 series, with the introduction of AI. While exact details remain undisclosed, the introduction of AI features powered by Samsung’s Galaxy AI model could enable a slew of new capabilities. These functionalities include AI Live Translate Call, allowing real-time audio and text translations during phone calls via Samsung’s phone app, and note summarization.
Moreover, Samsung plans to use AI for photo and video editing, aligning with the Pixel 8 series’ capabilities. Additionally, the company intends to adopt a dual strategy, using on-device processing for select features to uphold user privacy and leveraging cloud capabilities for others.
Finally, in terms of the Android version, the S24 series will launch with OneUI 6.1 running on top of Android 14, and the devices will receive four years of software support.
Battery and Charging
In terms of capacity, the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra will house batteries with capacities of 4,000mAh, 4,900mAh, and 5,000mAh, respectively. However, it is important to note that only the S24+ and S24 Ultra will support Samsung’s new Super Fast Charging 2.0, enabling charging speeds of up to 45W. Additionally, all three phones will feature wireless charging capabilities.
How much will the S24 series cost?
While the official pricing for the S24 series is unclear, a recent report from Korean publication Hankyung suggests that these new models will maintain the pricing of their predecessors, i.e., $799 for the S24, $899 for the S24+ and $1,199 for the S24 Ultra.
