Xiaomi Says You Can Officially Remove Mi Browser Pro and Mi Video
Back in June, India banned a list of 59 Chinese apps citing illicit data practices. Among many big names such as TikTok, ShareIT, UC Browser, two of Xiaomi apps were also banned including Mi Community and Mi Video.
Before the Chinese smartphone maker could lobby the decision-makers, the government of India banned another set of Chinese apps that also included Xiaomi’s Mi Browser Pro.
Now in a new post, Xiaomi has said that it is complying with the order by “disabling all online content feed including news service and games centre”. In another post, it has asked users to uninstall the Mi Browser app.
On our Poco X2, we noticed that the feed service is no longer available on the Mi Video app as well on the Mi Browser app. The same goes for Mi Browser Pro and the Xiaomi Mint browser.
Interestingly, we weren’t able to remove the pre-installed apps on our Xiaomi devices. While an update notification does pop-up on the Mi Video app, tapping on the “Update” button redirected us to the app’s banned page on the Google Play Store. Updating the app may have allowed Xiaomi users to remove the Mi video app, but it seems to be a dead end as of now.
As for the Mi Browser, Xiaomi said it will roll out an MIUI update that will enable users to remove the pre-installed app.
The update will arrive in a staged manner for the mentioned Xiaomi devices — Mi Mix 2, Redmi 6, Redmi 6 Pro, Redmi 6A, Redmi 7, Redmi 7A, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro, Redmi K30, Redmi K30 Pro, Redmi Y2, Redmi Y3, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7S, Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Redmi Note 9, Poco Fl, Poco X2, and Poco M2 Pro.
Bloatware (pre-installed apps that can’t be removed) on Xiaomi devices has always been an annoying aspect for Mi users. Thankfully, there is an easy, but a bit technical process through which users can remove pre-installed apps from Xiaomi devices.
Previously, we applied the same method to remove the notorious Mi Cleaner app. You can use the same method to remove the Mi Browser and Mi Video app from your Xiaomi device right now.
