Snapdragon 865 Leak Reveals Two Separate Versions, 5G Connectivity, LPDDR5 RAM
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 is currently the latest high-end chip available for flagship smartphones. It has been a while since it first appeared in the market. Now, rumors of a next-gen chip ‘Snapdragon 865’ with even more performance and 5G capabilities have started surfacing.
Last week, it was reported that Samsung will manufacture the rumored Snapdragon 865. A fresh report by popular tipster Roland Quandt from Winfuture claims that the upcoming SoC will arrive in two variants.
According to Quandt, the Snapdragon 865 is being referred to as SM8250 by Qualcomm employees and the two versions of the SoC have been codenamed Kona and Huracan.
He has further claims that one of the chipsets will arrive with an integrated 5G modem and the other without it. However, it’s unclear at the moment which version would come with the 5G modem integrated.
The tipster also revealed that both chipsets will support LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 3.0 storage. It is to be noted that UFS 3.0 has already arrived with Snapdragon 855 and the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro are the latest smartphones to support the high-speed memory.
Snapdragon 865 is what Qualcomm employees call the next gen high-end SoC (SM8250). There are two variants: Kona + Huracan. Both with support for LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 3.0. One likely with, one without integrated 5G modem (SDX55) – I guess. Also no clue which is the one w/ 5G in it.

However, the exciting part is that Snapdragon 865 will support LPDDR5 memory. For the uninitiated, LPDDR5 is a recent class that made its first appearance in JEDEC’s JESD209-5 released in February this year.
It features two new operations in comparison to LPDDR4 and they are focused on power consumption. LPDDR5 will also offer a lot more memory bandwidth than the current SoC.
The Snapdragon 865 is expected to arrive with the Galaxy S11 and other devices landing in Q1 2020.
