South Korean tech major Samsung has unveiled a new processor in its Exynos 9 series, dubbed the Exynos 9820. The new processor is touted to be the first Samsung processor to come with Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

Based on the 8nm FinFET process technology, the new Exynos 9820 comes equipped with on-device AI-based apps and a standalone hardware AI accelerator for seven times better performance of AI tasks.

The Samsung Exynos 9820 chipset ensures a 20 percent increase in single-core performance and 15 percent improvement in multi-core performance. Additionally, it’s 40 percent more power efficient as compared to the predecessor processors.

Ben Hur, Vice President of System LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics said, “The AI capabilities in the Exynos 9 Series 9820 will provide a new dimension of performance in smart devices through an integrated NPU, high-performance fourth-generation custom CPU core, 2.0Gbps LTE modem, and improved multimedia performance.

The processor features a fourth-generation custom CPU and 2.0-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) LTE Advanced Pro modem.

It supports 4K UHD videos at 150 frames per second (fps) with the help of Exynos 9820’s Multi Format Codec (MFC). Furthermore, the new SoC sports the latest Mali-G76 GPU and is expected to deliver 35 percent power savings.

Additionally, the new Exynos 9820 is expected to power the upcoming Samsung foldable smartphone and the Galaxy S10.

The Samsung Exynos 9820 processor’s mass production is expected to begin by the end of this year.
