Apple’s T2 Chip In MacBook Has A Never Seen Before Security Feature
Apple is known for making its devices secure and ensuring that they collect a minimum amount of data from the users. In the recently released MacBook Air, Apple has fitted a new T2 chip that brings many security-related features to the revamped MacBook.
The Cupertino company published a security document recently, highlighting the efficiency of the T2 chip. The chip is used by Apple to store sensitive biometric data, for locking the boot process and for some other complex security tasks. The Chip also allows the users to trigger Siri by calling “Hey Siri” without needing to press any button.
One of the most exciting features of the T2 Chip is called “hardware disconnect.” The feature disconnects any connected audio device automatically when the lid of the MacBook is closed.
According to Apple’s support guide document, “This disconnect is implemented in hardware alone, and therefore prevents any software, even with root or kernel privileges in macOS, and even the software on the T2 chip, from engaging the microphone when the lid is closed,”
The feature will prevent the hackers from eavesdropping on your microphone and is a major leap towards securing devices. The feature does not disconnect camera as the field of the view is completely obstructed when the lid is closed.
By introducing this feature, Apple has indicated that MacBook is also prone to attacks by bad actors, but they are doing their part to make the device secure. T2 chip’s hardware disconnect feature would be helpful against government snooping and eavesdropping by the third-party applications.
