You Might Have To Pay For Using Facebook Groups
Yesterday, Facebook announced testing of paid subscription groups to help group admins monetize their efforts by charging $4.99 to $29.99 per month for exclusive content. The groups that have been chosen with this initial phase of the chargeable subscription are parenting, home cleaning and cooking.
This is a pilot project, and Facebook is trying to test the scope of paid services. There is no option of earning money from groups as of now, so admins create an additional subscribers only group where payments are managed with the help of third-party tools.
In an official blog post, Facebook Group’s Product Director Alex Dave said, “Subscription groups were created to make it easier for admins to provide these experiences with built-in tools, and to save them time so they can focus on offering members-only content.”
Facebook has said that it won’t take any cut from the subscription amount as of now.
This decision towards paid services won’t be Facebook’s debut move. Previously, Facebook also tried supporting video creators by experimenting with a subscription-based model wherein users would pay for premium content.
How users respond to this pilot program will be worth watching. But the important question is whether it is the beginning of the end of free content on Facebook? What do you think?
