Qualcomm has announced its upcoming Snapdragon 865 processor for mobile devices that will power most of the flagship devices in 2020. The company has packed some very exciting features in the chip including AI, 5G, performance improvement and more.

5 Top Features Of Snapdragon 865

1. Pixel processing up to 2 Gigapixels/sec & Support for up to 200MP

Snapdragon 865 brings tonnes of camera features and it would not be wrong to say that the biggest upgrades in Snapdragon 865 come in the camera department. The new chip brings a new Spectra 480 computer-vision ISP (image signal processor). The new camera sub-system is capable of 4 pixels per clock as compared to the processing speed of 1 pixel per clock in Snapdragon 855.

Now you can record 8K videos at 30 fps and in addition to HDR10, HDR10+ content, Snapdragon 865 also supports live recording in Dolby Vision HDR standard making it the first mobile processor in the world to do so.

With the Megapixel war brewing amongst OEMs, Qualcomm has added support for up to 200-megapixel sensors. The largest sensor that exists currently is Samsung’s 108MP sensor made its debut in Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro.

2. GPU Driver updates via Google Play Store

With Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm is bringing the feature where you’ll be able to update the graphics drivers on your smartphone similar to how you update an app. Thanks to Google’s Project Mainline, Adreno 650 GPU in SD 865 and other future Snapdragon chipsets will get updates for GPU drivers to improve the performance with time. However, the frequency of updates will depend on OEMs, reports Android Police. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest features of Snapdragon 865.

3. 25% performance improvement

Qualcomm says that its new Qualcomm 865 features 25% faster CPU and GPU than its predecessor. As reported by AnandTech, Snapdragon 865 is based on TSMC’s 7nm “N7p” node manufacturing process which is also used in Apple’s latest A13 chipsets. It comes as a surprise as Qualcomm was expected to use Samsung’s 7nm EUV process.

The company has added a new Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator that delivers 15 trillion operations per second for maximum performance.

4. Mandatory Snapdragon X55 Chip for 5G

Qualcomm wants major OEMs to bring devices with 5G modem and it is the reason why it has not integrated 5G modem. Leveraging its monopoly in the market, Qualcomm is making it mandatory for OEMs’ to ship devices having SD 865 with its X55 5G modem. Snapdragon 865 will support 5G network which is expected to offer speeds up to 7.5Gbps.

5. New gaming features

Earlier this year, Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 855 Plus which majorly focused on bringing gaming-related improvements. This year, the company is pushing its efforts forward by introducing new features in its Snapdragon Elite Gaming concept. Snapdragon 865 features Desktop Forward Rendering, Qualcomm game Color Plus v2.0, Qualcomm Game Smoother and several other features for improving the gaming performance of devices.

The features promised by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 sound exciting. Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, and Motorola have already confirmed that they are devices lined up with the latest Snapdragon 865 and more OEMs are expected to roll out smartphones with Snapdragon 865 processor in 2020.
