Shatterproof Display vs. Gorilla Glass: Pros and Cons You Need To Be Familiar With
Short Bytes: A shatterproof display present is not a groundbreaking addition to a mobile phone as Motorola has used it on countless occasions for its high-end lineup. The latest phone to don this shatterproof display is the Moto Z2 Force and it features an adequate number of differences compared to the latest iteration of Corning’s Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass 5. What are the advantages and the disadvantages of both types of smartphone protection? Let us find out.
Having a shatterproof display that does not break into smithereens upon impact is a dream come true for millions of users that have gone through the traumatic experience of seeing their expensive and prized possession meet its demise with the hard and unrelenting pavement, or just another hard surface.Such phones feature Corning’s latest version of Gorilla Glass, the Gorilla Glass 5, and it’s is found on several flagship smartphones released in 2017.
Now looking at the loss the person has to endure in watching the Gorilla Glass shatter, you’d probably think that having a shatterproof display presents a far better formula than Gorilla Glass 5 right? Well, that is true to an extent, but Motorola has not managed to divulge the entire truth.
Shatterproof displays are shatter-resistant, but sharp objects will test this protection
Unlike Gorilla Glass 5, a shatterproof display will easily take a beating from your regular hammer beat down session. This is because instead of using tempered glass, this display utilizes several layers of plastic attached to the front side of the phone to protect it from various elements.
In short, since it is essentially plastic that is protecting the mobile phone from a painful ending, the display will remain unscathed, in a matter of speaking.
You are probably aware that plastic is soft in chemical composition, so if a sharp object such as a knife, coin or even your fingernail scratches the surface of a phone that features a shatterproof display, there is going to be an irreparable mark on that display, prompting the owner to make a quick trip to the smartphone repair center.
If you are going to purchase a handset like the Moto Z2 Force, which to reiterate has a shatterproof display, it is highly recommended that you purchase a high-quality tempered glass screen protector so that the front side of the device can have a significant layer of protection.
As for the Gorilla Glass 5, though it can easily shatter when significant brute force is applied in form of a hammer beatdown, the glass is extremely scratch-resistant. The current-generation Gorilla Glass 5 can easily come out unscathed to things like knives, keys, coins and definitely your fingernails.
In the majority of cases, it is pointless to have a screen protector applied to a phone that features the latest version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass because the glass itself can prevent the smartphone to a certain extent and having a tempered glass protector will be considered redundant.
If applying a tempered glass screen protector is done to protect the phone’s display from cracking or shattering when dropped, then you would have wasted money on a decent-priced accessory since it would crack all the same.
Are bulky smartphone cases a viable solution to give your phone increased protection?
Whatever display the phone comes with, having a phone case that adds a little bit of bulk to it is always advantageous for the end user. However, having bulky smartphone cases adds unnecessary volume, weight, resulting in a discomforting experience for an average smartphone user.
Its bulk is what prevents extensive damage from being inflicted to the mobile device. Bulky smartphone cases provide a small depression for not just the display, but also for the camera lens, which the majority of manufacturers use glass as it prevents scratching on the lens.
So when the phone is dropped, it will make contact with the edges of the smartphone case and not the display or camera lens of the device, but that will also depend on which part of the phone makes contact with the surface.
