Instagram Gets ‘Activity Status’ Indicator To Show When You’re Online

If you think that you can ignore the messages of your friends on Instagram without letting them know and keep reading posts, then we have sad news for you. Instagram has added a green dot in the front of profiles to let your contacts know when you’re online.

Announced in an official blog post, the activity status indicator will be available right next to your profile picture in the direct messaging section of the social networking app.

“When your friends are active on Instagram, you’ll see a green dot next to their profile picture in various spaces within the app, including the Direct inbox and your friend list when you share a post from feed,” said the post.

Thankfully, users have the option of disabling the feature by going to the Settings Page and turning off ‘Show Activity Status’ option. Instagram has stated that the activity status will be available only to those who follow you or who have talked to you in DMs.

This is seen as a move to engage more users on Instagram and to promote conversations in the app. Many users have compared this new Activity Status feature of Instagram to a similar feature of AOL instant messenger.

Instagram was one of the very few online social networking sites until now where there was no ‘activity tracking’ mechanism. Alas, no more.
