Upcoming Linux Distributions Releasing In December 2016
Short Bytes: In December 2016, a big Linux distribution release is taking shape in the form of Linux Mint 18.1 Serena, flavored by Cinnamon 3.2. It’ll be accompanied by the release of security and privacy-focused Anonymous Live CD Tails 2.9.

Linux Mint 18.1
Released Date: Late December
Last week, the Linux Mint Project announced the Beta release of the second point release of Linux Mint 18.1, i.e., Linux Mint 18.1 Serena. The final release will arrive later this December and remain supported until 2021. Arriving with Cinnamon 3.2, Mint 18.1 will be based on solid Linux kernel 4.4 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
Mint 18.1 comes with various improvements in Xed, Xplayer, X-Apps, Update Manager, MDM Display Manager, Language Settings, Input Methods etc. For more details on these changes, you can read our dedicated article.
Tails 2.9
Release Date: December 12
In mid-November, we were greeted with the release of Tails 2.7 that brought along an updated version of Tor, Tor Browser, and Icedove. It also fixed multi-architecture support in Synaptic.
If you take a look at the Tails release calendar, you’ll find that Tails 2.9 is expected to arrive on December 12 with Firefox 45.6, followed by Tails 2.10 on January 24. To know more about the Tails 2.9 roadmap, you can visit this link.
Apart from these popular Linux distro releases, Linux kernel 4.9 is also scheduled to arrive on December 11.
