Microsoft: Internet Explorer 11 Is The Last Major Version Of Internet Explorer
Short Bytes: Microsoft has just announced that it’s ending the support for older versions of Internet Explorer. Redmond also mentioned that Internet Explorer 11 will be last major version of IE that will be supported for the life of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
Microsoft’s step to end support for the older versions is an obvious one as it is looking to make Microsoft Edge its primary browser. According to Microsoft advisory, the older versions of Internet Explorer have January 12, 2016 to upgrade.
“Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10,” said Microsoft in a statement.
It means that after January 12, 2016, only Internet Explorer 11, the most current version of IE will be supported by Microsoft. So after this date, Microsoft is not going to release security updates and technical support for the older versions.
Microsoft, in its statement, also points out the potential risks of using the outdated versions of Internet Explorer. “Without critical browser security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software,” Redmond writes.
Well, if you are wondering how long will the Internet Explorer 11 be supported? Microsoft has an answer and it says that IE 11 will be supported for the “the life of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.”
In its official statement, Microsoft repeatedly mentions Microsoft Edge and urges the users to try out its latest browser. However, the adoption rate of Edge has been low and the extension support in the next Windows 10 update is expected to give it some boost.
