Microsoft Launches GitHub India: Offers Hackathon Grants Up To $1,000
Microsoft has announced a new subsidiary in India, called GitHub India Private Limited, to boost the growing developer community and enterprises in the country.
GitHub says India is the third-largest active developer community on its platform after the US and China. In fact, the Indian GitHub community has seen a growth of 22% in the last year.
Newly appointed General Manager of GitHub India, Maneesh Sharma will be leading the subsidiary.
Over the next few months, Microsoft will establish dedicated teams across the community, engineering, sales, support, marketing, and services. These teams will promote the adoption of the best DevOps practices among Indian developers.
GitHub says that “Indian developers are truly building the future of software.” Over the past year, the number of public repositories in India has grown 75%, exhibiting a sharp increase in collaboration across the Indian developer community.
GitHub India Will Support Student Developer Community
India is also one of the largest communities of student developers in the world. GitHub writes in its blog post:
“Investing in the future of open source by empowering students is key to our efforts to support the amazing developer ecosystem in India.”
To that end, the code repository platform has also announced an extension of GitHub Education in the country. The popular GitHub Hackathon Grant program has also been extended to Indian students. GitHub India will support student hackathons grants up to $1,000.
Additionally, GitHub Enterprise plans to support existing local companies like Swiggy and ArisGlobal, and bring in more enterprises for collaboration and software building.
