This Laser Can Send Secret Messages Directly To Your Friend’s Ear

A group of researchers has discovered a way to laser a whispered message directly into the other person’s ear. The MIT team used a laser beam to transmit sounds at as low as 60 decibels to the person standing 2.5m away.

For the study, the researchers relied upon the photoacoustic effect, in which water vapor in the air absorbs light and forms sound waves. One more technique was used to modulate the power of the laser beam and generate a quieter sound.

Charles M. Wynn, the team leader, said in a press release, “This can work even in relatively dry conditions because there is almost always a little water in the air, especially around people,”

Under the research, the team beamed different types of sounds such as recorded speech, music, and various tones, all at the conversational volume.

The MIT researcher further plans to use the discovered tech in outdoors, at longer ranges, according to the MIT Technology Review. If the research gets to see the light of the day, it would not be surprising to see the technology being used for intelligence purposes as well.
