Amazon Starts Rolling Out Autonomous Delivery Robots
Robots delivering packages is something you would say is a scene of a science fiction movie. But, we’re closer to future than you think as Amazon has already started delivering using robots.
Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will start delivering prime orders using a sidewalk robot named Amazon Scout.
According to the company’s official statement, Amazon Scouts are six-wheeled robots that “are the size of a small cooler and roll along sidewalks at a walking pace.” The statement said, “Starting today, these devices will begin delivering packages to customers in a neighborhood in Snohomish County, Washington.”
The autonomous robots will be used for delivery from Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The online retailer has deployed six Amazon Scouts as of now. Initially, the robots will be accompanied by an Amazon employee for guiding it through “pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path.” Soon they will autonomously follow the delivery route.
It is not the first time when a company has used robots for delivery. Companies like Starship and marble are already using delivery robots. However, Amazon is the biggest retailer in the world, and the new method of delivery could change the e-commerce industry as we know it.
As of now, we do not have the exact details of how Amazon would replace human beings with robots — will the robots wait at the porch of the receiver if he/she is not at home or some other alternative will be used?
