Apple Watch Series 4 To Finally Get ECG Feature With watchOS 5.1.2

Apple announced Apple Watch Series 4 in September, bringing a nearly bezel-less screen and a set of advanced features such as fall detection, emergency SOS, and a comprehensive activity tracker.

However, one of the most exciting features was the electrocardiogram feature that could detect and alert users about a variety of cardiac problems. At its launch event, Apple said the feature would be released “later this year.”

As per a report by MacRumors, watchOS 5.1.2, which is currently in beta, will bring this functionality to thsmartwatchch.

With the arrival of the feature, Apple Watch Series 4 will be the first FDA approved smart device equipped with ECG capabilities that could be purchased without requiring a prescription.

To use the feature, Apple Watch wearers would have to hold their finger for thirty seconds on the redesigned digital crown. With the data obtained, users can get to know whether their heart is beating normally or if there are signs of atrial fibrillation.

The ECG feature would be available initially in the US where it has been approved by FDA and will be rolled out globally gradually.

watchOS 5.1.2 was released for beta testers on November 7 along with iOS 12.1.1. We can expect Apple to release both the updates soon.

MacRumors has also reported that older models of Apple Watch, including starting from Apple Watch Series 1, would receive irregular heart rhythm notification feature with the upcoming watchOS update.
