Talking about the changes in update manager, there are many visual and under the hood changes, including the use of stack widgets, subtle animations, and better support for alternative themes.

In Linux Mint 18 ‘Sarah’, apart from all the previously supported features, apt also supports the Debian syntax. Also, apt install and apt remove now show progress.

In this release, exFAT file systems are supported out of the box and Btrfs support is back and installed by default.

The KDE Edition also gets the advantage of the Linux Mint 18’s improved HiDPI support. Just like other editions, in KDE, most of the Mint apps and Firefox are now migrated to GTK3.
