Lucid Air is the first upcoming luxury electric car from the California based startup, Lucid Motors. What puts Lucid Air electric car so important is its estimated EPA range of over 500 miles on a single charge. With this range, it seeks to take the crown of the longest-range electric car from the Tesla Model S, which has an EPA range of 402 miles.

Lucid Motors made this announcement based on the results of an electric range test conducted by FEV North America, which is an engineering services company. FEV followed the same testing cycle and the standards used by EPA. However, there might be slight changes in the final battery range when the EPA conducts the final test.

According to the results, Lucid Air has an electric range of 517 miles. Furthermore, Peter Rawlinson, the CEO and CTO of Lucid Air said, “I’m delighted that the Lucid Air has been independently verified by FEV to achieve an estimated EPA range of 517 miles, and that this landmark in the history of EV development has been achieved entirely through Lucid’s in-house technology“.

Talking about the Lucid’s in-house technology, it already specializes in EV batteries. The company has provided electric batteries for all formula E racing cars for the 2018-19 season. Another cool thing about Lucid motor is that Peter Rawlinson has work experience as an ex-Chief engineer at Tesla.

Lucid Air Is Led By Former Tesla Engineer

Peter Rawlinson was the main engineer behind the development of Tesla Model S. However, in 2013, Peter joined Lucid Air as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and in 2019 he became the CEO of the company. Earlier in 2020, Peter said that Lucid Air will have a range of above 400 miles and it will be better than Tesla Model S.

At that time, nobody had imagined that the final battery range would be 117 miles more than the stated 400 miles. Not only this, but Lucid Air will be the first electric car to have a 900-volt system. Currently, Porsche uses the highest 800-volt battery system in its Porsche Taycan electric car. Moreover, with a 900-volt system, Lucid Air will be able to have lighting-fast charging speed. Lucid Air will be able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds.

Apart from this, there is no information regarding the battery pack of the electric car. However, as per the reports, the battery size would be somewhere around 130 kWh. On the other hand, Tesla Model S is equipped with a 100 kWh battery. It seems Tesla might have to increase the battery size of Model S to save its crown. It is also important to note that the Tesla Model S uses an older gen-battery pack compared to the one used in Model 3.

The company will announce the specification on 9th September at the unveiling event of the car. In addition, the company will be announcing the price and other relevant information. Further, the electric sedan will be produced at the company’s Casa Grand factory in Arizona, and deliveries are expected to start in early 2021.
