After 18 months of an investigation against Facebook, probing the social media platform’s privacy practice, the UK government has published a detailed report. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee of the UK Parliament has accused Facebook of violating data privacy laws.

The report also contained information acquired from Facebook’s internal emails. The officials have asked social media platforms to remove “hurtful” or “illegal” content and must be held responsible for it. Members of Parliament have advocated for a compulsory code of conduct that must be followed by the social media companies to limit their role and to make them accountable for their actions.

Damian Collins, who led the investigation said, “Our inquiry over the last year has identified three big threats to our society. The challenge for the year ahead is to start to fix them; we cannot delay any longer.”

The report focused on the means to tackle fake news and disinformation and attacked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his complacent attitude.

Collins said that Zuckerberg “continually fails to show the levels of leadership and personal responsibility that should be expected from someone who sits at the top of one of the world’s biggest companies.”

In response to the report, Palant, Facebook’s public policy manager said that the company is concerned about the UK government’s report on fake news. Palant also said that “substantial changes” have been made to political advertising standards to curb the menace of misinformation.
