How To Set ChatGPT As The Default Voice Assistant On Android?
Generative AI has taken the world by storm, penetrating almost every industry, from designing and coding to music. Undoubtedly, the best use case of generative AI is in the voice assistant industry, which has seen limited development in the past few years. While Google has recently started rolling out Gemini as a replacement for Google Assistant, many users prefer OpenAI’s ChatGPT, considering it was the first one to come out. As a result, here is a quick and simple way to make ChatGPT your default voice assistant on Android.
Set ChatGPT as the default voice assistant
Before we start with the process, it is important to note that OpenAI does not offer an official way to set ChatGPT as the default voice assistant. Therefore, this article uses the VoiceGPT app developed by WSTxda.
- Download the official ChatGPT app from the Play Store [here] and set it up.
- Visit the GitHub page of the VoiceGPT app and download the APK from the Assets section.
- Once downloaded, install the app.
- Open the app and click “Use Assistant” on the popup. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Default Digital Assistant app.
- Select Voice GPT from the following menu.
What Can You Do with VoiceGPT and How Does It Compare to Gemini?
To put these assistants to the test, we asked them to plan a trip to Goa under 10,000 INR. Starting with VoiceGPT, the interface when using the assistant was minimal and did not include images or text to help with the planning. However, the voice sounded human, and it felt like conversing with an actual person who was keen on helping me throughout the process. Follow-up questions were also managed well, considering we asked the chatbot about recommending budget places to stay and adventures to do. Moreover, the fact that the transcript of these conversations is stored in the ChatGPT app allows anyone to look back at what they asked for future reference.
On the other hand, Google’s Gemini seemed more like searching the web, as there is no voice helping users understand. Although there is an option to dictate what the assistant has searched, that voice sounds unnatural and worse than the previous Google Assistant.
However, it is important to note that Gemini offered a more comprehensive answer. Furthermore, ChatGPT cannot perform regular tasks such as setting a timer or taking a selfie. As a result, choosing the default assistant will depend on your preferences and workflow.
