Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 888 Plus With 3GHz Clock Speed
Mobile chipset giant Qualcomm has announced the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G chip. The company claims this chip to have an improvement of 20% over the current Snapdragon 888 platform.
The Snapdragon 888 Plus comes with Snapdragon Elite Gaming features to improve the chip’s responsiveness. A lot of Android devices use Snapdragon 800 series platforms in their flagship smartphones.
What’s New In The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus?
The Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G offers a 20% performance improvement compared to the current SD888 SoC. Based on a 5nm architecture, the SD888+ is equipped with Kryo 680 CPU Prime core, clocking as high as almost 3.0 GHz.
I say “almost” because the actual clock speed is 2.995 GHz. The clock speed is enough to put a smile on a gamer’s face. But it doesn’t end there. Qualcomm has also updated the chip with a 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, with up to 32 TOPS AI performance. For comparison, the current Snapdragon 888 comes with 26 TOPS AI performance.
This improved AI performance will translate to better gaming and photography experience. Talking about photography, the chip will pack Triple ISP, which means support for triple 4K HDR video capture.
It is rightly called the SD888+ because the platform is majorly an improvement over the existing SD888. While the current chip is blazing fast with excellent GeekBench scores, the Snapdragon 888 Plus Geek Bench scores go as high as 1171 for single-core and 3704 for multi-core.
Which Phones Will Come With Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G?
Qualcomm’s press release says that the first commercial devices with Snapdragon 888 Plus are expected to be announced in the third quarter of 2021. So we can expect the first phone running Snapdragon 888 Plus by the end of this year.
Asus ROG Phone will be among the first devices to come with the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G. The ROG Phone will benefit from features like the improved AI performance and variable rate shading as a gaming phone.
Since the ROG Phone also has an active cooling system, it is more likely to use this processor’s full 3.0 GHz potential.
Honor has also made it official that the SD888 Plus will make “a perfect fit for HONOR’s upcoming Magic3 series flagship”. Motorola, Xiaomi, and Vivo will also bring flagship phones with Qualcomm SD888 Plus other than Asus and Honor.
