Short Bytes: IEEE has published the first draft guide for arriving at a consensus on how to achieve an ethical design. Named Ethically Aligned Design, this 136-page document tackles the biggest challenge faced by the AI experts. IEEE has also published guidelines for the submission of comments and feedback from people.

The fast rate of development in the AI field has sparked the discussion regarding the ethical dilemmas associated with it. In the past, eminent personalities like Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk have expressed their concern.

Now, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has published the first draft of a document titled Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Wellbeing with Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems (AI/AS).  The paper aims at exploring the ethical changes posed by AI.

This draft is a result of the combined efforts of more than 100 global leaders. Apart from the AI field, the list has experts from different science, academia, government, corporate, law, and philosophy sectors.

IEEE wishes to develop a consensus and invite public comment. It’ll be making all the input and feedback publicly available. For the interested parties, there’s a Submissions Guideline on the IEEE website.

This document spans across 136 pages and covers general AI principles as well as how to tackle potential biases, autonomous weapons systems, achieving trust, and other particular AI challenges.

The first version of Ethically Aligned Design has been released under the Attribution-NonCommercial version of CC license. The full text of the PDF can be found here.
