Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg poured a bucket full of ice-cold water over his head as a part of ALS Bucket Challenge and nominated Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to do the same.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is a fatal degradation of nerves and muscles. Currently only one drug is FDA approved in U.S. to treat ALS, which just extends survival by two to three months. As a result, ALS is 100 percent fatal.
The rules of the ALS Bucket Challenge are simple: Dump a bucket full of ice-water over head OR make a monetary donation to ALS foundation – OR both. And when you do that, you nominate more people to do so within twenty-four hours.
This ALS Bucket Challenge has become a viral movement creating a platform to spread awareness and providing financial support to the needy. Between July 29and 12 August, the ALS Association and its 38 chapters have been able to collect a donation of $4 million.
The other celebrities to take the challenge are Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake, Elizabeth Banks, Martha Stewart and many more. On the other hand Obama refused to take the challenge, he’ll be making a donation to ALS foundation this week.
