Zoom Says Sorry And Announces A 90-day Feature Freeze

Usage of Zoom and other video conferencing tools has skyrocketed, thanks to Coronavirus Pandemic that has forced millions to work from home.

Zoom claims that it saw 200 million daily users in March as opposed to merely 10 million daily users in December. The massive increase in popularity, consequentially, also revealed multiple security and privacy shortcomings of the platform.

While Zoom has fixed most of them, the company has now come out with an official apology letter, also detailing how it has addressed the issues.

What went wrong?

Zoom says that the video conferencing tool was “built primarily for enterprise customers,” and it did not expect every person would be using Zoom. Hence, the company did not anticipate new challenges.

What is Zoom doing?

First and foremost, Zoom has decided to “feature freeze” for the next 90 days. In other words, the company will focus on finding and fixing privacy and security issues instead of rolling out new features.

Other than that, Zoom has decided to “enhance” its bug bounty program. It will organize weekly webinars to discuss all the issues lurking on the platform for the next 90 days.

Also, Zoom will release a transparency report “that details information related to requests for data, records, or content.”

We appreciate Zoom’s response and quick fixes will help Zoom emerge as a more secure product. For the time being, we recommend users to look at a few Zoom alternatives.
