Windows Terminal is getting more traction as Microsoft is quickly adding more features to the new CLI app it launched last year. The latest addition to the feature-set is the old-school CRT-mode, which will remind you of the pre-LED and LCD era if you’re old enough to have used it in person.
As you might know, CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube that was an integral part of various display technologies used in the 20th century. The retro-style CRT effects are included in the Windows Terminal 0.8 release candidate that is limited to Microsoft employees right now.
It’s currently an experimental feature, and Redmond is using the PxPlus IBM VGA8 font to make the experience as nostalgic as possible.
In addition to this, Microsoft is also adding more features like tab resizing, custom default settings, and the ability to search inside the terminal app.
The tab resizing feature allows more tabs to fit inside the terminal window at a given time. Furthermore, enhanced panes and tabs key bindings let users specify a profile to open using custom key bindings.
The Windows Terminal 0.8 is due for an official release on January 14.
All of this builds on top of other amazing Windows Terminal features that Microsoft introduced last year. For example, the ability to drag the UI from anywhere on the title bar, improved dropdown button layout, tab reordering, new accessibility features, and so on.
