Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has ensured another Olympic medal for India by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen. She became the third Indian boxer to bring home an Olympic medal after Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012). Borgohain will now be fighting Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the Tokyo Olympics women’s boxing semi-final bout on August 4.
She is now working her way up to win India’s first silver or even gold medal for boxing in the Olympics. She has previously won bronze medals twice in the World Championship and once in the Asain Championship.
Despite her well-deserved victory, her next match will be quite a challenge. She will be fighting against reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey. In her quarterfinal match, Surmeneli hammered Ukraine’s, Anna Lysenko. In the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she has won both her bouts with a 5-0 scoreline. Surmeneli is currently ranked 2nd in the world.
