Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights and Parenthood) is widely recognized for creating television that makes you cry. And his latest on Apple TV+, Dear Edward, is no exception. Even if high school football isn’t your thing or a tragedy on the scale of the plane crash exists only in your dreams, Katims will focus on the universal (and even mundane) aspects to a significant teary-eyed effect. Dear Edward is far from the only recent series to use a plane disaster as a jumping-off point. But unlike Yellowjackets (and even Lost), it avoids anything otherworldly or unexplainable.

The premise is straightforward: Edward (Colin O’Brien), 12, is the sole survivor of a commercial airline catastrophe that destroyed his entire family. Now he must deal with enormous grief, guilt, and unwanted fame as the “Miracle Boy.” Although Edward’s name appears in the title, he is far from the only story being told. And here’s everything you need to know.

Dear Edward: Everything you need to know
Dear Edward is based on the novel of the same name by Ann Napolitano. Napolitano was inspired in part by the true events of Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 on May 12, 2010, in which a nine-year-old boy was the only survivor. Dear Edward is the story of Edward Adler, the sole survivor of a horrific plane catastrophe. After losing his entire family in the crash, Edward is taken in by his aunt and uncle.
As it follows the stories of those left behind by those killed in the crash, the series examines grief from various perspectives. After the tragedy completely turns their worlds upside down, the survivors will learn new things about their loved ones and themselves. The series stars Connie Britton, Colin O’Brien, and Taylor Schilling in lead roles.
Will Edward overcome his grief? Well, we will have to wait until the final episode premieres on March 24, 2023. While we are on that note, check out our latest guide on the crime thriller movie, Vadh- here.
