Tesla Model S Raven Shelby GT500

A Tesla Model S Raven left the 2020 Shelby GT500 in the dust in a quarter-mile drag race. The Tesla Model S dominated the drag strip and beat the 2020 Shelby GT500 in a total of three races.

Brooks, who runs the YouTube channel DragTimes, recorded the quarter-mile drag between the two cars and gave his analysis of the entire race as well.

Tesla Model S Raven Beats Shelby GT 500

Tesla Model S Raven comes with twin electric motors producing a total of 920 ft-lb of torque and 588 HP. It comes with an All-Wheel Drive system that powers all four wheels. The 100 kWh battery pack in the Model S gives it over 300 miles of range but also increases its weight to a whopping 4,900 pounds. The cost of the Tesla Model S Raven is hefty $110,000.

The 2020 Shelby GT500 uses a 5.2L V8 Supercharged Internal combustion engine which produces 760 HP but only 713 HP reaches the rear wheels as it’s a Real Wheel Drive car. The new Shelby GT500 is equipped with a super smooth 7-Speed DCT transmission, which shifts gears very fast.

The supercharged engine can rev up to 7,000 RPM, which is pretty high. The Shelby GT500 uses the Mustang S550 platform introduced in 2015, and it’s famous for having Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). The Shelby GT500 is famous for having a really loud exhaust note, which is why the 2020 version comes with four exhaust sound modes.

Although people modify their Shelbys to make up to 1,000 HP, this Shelby GT500 didn’t have any additional upgrades.

Despite having a monstrous V8, the Shelby GT500 had a hard time catching up to the Tesla Model S Raven. With a 0-60 mph acceleration timing of 2.41 seconds, the Tesla Model S is pretty much out of the range of the Shelby GT500 which achieves the same speed in 3.5 seconds.

The advantage the GT500 has over Tesla is of a blistering top end. Unfortunately for Shelby, the race was only a quarter-mile long.

Another area where the Shelby GT500 gets defeated by the Tesla Model S is in terms of the overall range. The Shelby GT500, because of its low fuel economy, only delivers around 220 miles between fuel refills. The Tesla Model S Raven has a range of 348 miles. The long-range variant of the Model S goes even further with 370 miles of range upon one full charge.

The Tesla Model S, despite being a four-door electric sedan, competes with the likes of two-door sports cars like the McLaren 720s in terms of acceleration.

According to Car and Driver, the McLaren 720s coupe, which they tested, goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds. However, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S is fast enough to tackle the Tesla Model S on the quarter-mile track.

If you want to see an official battle between the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, then keep watching this space. Brooks has confirmed that he’s working on organizing the race and would release it really soon.
