Vivo Vision+ RGBW Camera Sensor With 160% More Exposure Announced


Chinese tech giant Vivo has announced its new RGBW camera sensor, the Vivo Vision+. The new sensor is reported to replace the existing ones on the Vivo smartphone lineup by the second half of 2021. It will gradually become the default camera sensor for its phones.

While the idea of an RGBW sensor is not new, Vivo claims to have polished the chinks in its armor, using advanced algorithms to improve colors. For context, RGBW (Red, Green, Blue, and White) is a camera sensor arrangement. The Chinese smartphone maker has developed this technology and sensor in-house.

The sensor designed by Vivo claims 160% more exposure or light sensitivity. Simply put, it can capture sharp images faster than their current sensors. It will minimize the false-color tone problems caused by light. The sensor also has an improved light sensitivity.

The Vivo Vision+ RGBW sensor is showcased in a video posted by Sparrows News on YouTube. The video was originally posted on Vivo’s Weibo page in China.

Vivo, in partnership with National Geographic, has also announced the Vision+ Mobile Photography Awards, the details of which will be available on its website.

Vivo RGBW sensor: Nothing New. Or Is It?

It is not the first time a company has talked about an RGBW camera sensor. Back in 2015, a similar layout was used in the Huawei P8. The P8 came with a 13MP RGBW sensor that was claimed to deliver up to 32% higher brightness and cut down low-light noise up to 78%. In 2012, Sony also talked about a sensor with an RGBW arrangement for added brightness and sensitivity.

The camera sensor is the brains of any camera unit. It is the part that captures light & colors and allows your phone to process the image. The RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) setup represents the pixels that mix and match to capture accurate colors. The Vivo RGBW setup adds a new white pixel to capture more light, hence 160% more exposure.

In Vivo’s case, the company has not only used an RGBW setup, but advanced algorithms to polish the results from this sensor arrangement, compensating for the missing colors. Reduced false tones and a snappier shutter may be the direct results of this new camera arrangement in its phones.
