A confidential US government plan has stated that the Coronavirus pandemic could last “18 months or more”. It clearly means that it is going to have a high negative impact on the large scale industries of the private sector and US consumers.
A report by The New York Times citing sources from a leaked US government plan of 100 pages mentioned the tactics to combat coronavirus. It also warned the policymakers that the Coronavirus outbreak could make its presence felt “in multiple waves” over a period of 18 months. The report also said that the pandemic will also damage the nation’s health care system.
Defense Production Act
As per the report, US President Donald Trump could also go for the Defense Production Act of 1950, a law that permits the president to force the American industry for boosting the production of critical equipment and supplies. This could include protective gear, ventilators, and respirators for the health care workers.
Donald Trump mentioned in a statement on March 17, 2020, that we’re not yet thinking about invoking Defense Production Act. However, Trump also said it clearly that if the situation aggravates, he will immediately invoke it.
New York Times avoided publishing the complete government plan due to its confidential nature. The report concluded by saying that most of the strategies in the US government’s plan have been executed already including the closing of schools and cancellation of large events.
Providing money to the states to meet demands to tackle Coronavirus, distributing medical equipment from Strategic National Stockpile were stated as alternatives for the US government in the report.
