The WannaCry ransomware that affected millions of Windows machines earlier this year hardly needs an introduction. The deadly ransomware came into existence after an NSA hacking tool based on a Windows flaw was leaked by a hacker group called Shadow Brokers.

All the time since the attack first came to the world’s attention, there has been uncertainty regarding the real force behind the infamous malware. Earlier, it was assumed that the WannaCry hackers were based in China.

Now, the US government has publically accused North Korea as the power responsible for fueling the WannaCry ransomware, according to a writing published (via The Verge) in the Wall Street Journal by Thomas Bossert. He is President Donald Trump’s Homeland Security Advisor.

An official announcement is expected to come out of the White House on Tuesday. The reports of North Korea’s involvement in spreading WannaCry ransomware first flew in the air in June this year. It was known the NSA had the evidence that traced back WannaCry ransomware to North Korea.

“We do not make this allegation lightly. It is based on evidence. We are not alone with our findings, either. Other governments and private companies agree,” Bossert wrote. He called the consequences and repercussions of the ransomware “beyond economic.”

“The United Kingdom attributes the attack to North Korea, and Microsoft traced the attack to cyber affiliates of the North Korean government.”

The US government strongly believes that the Lazarus Group carried out the WannaCry attack, an anonymous official told Reuters. The hacker group, backed by the North Korean government, was recently held responsible for running an email campaign to infect the systems of cryptocurrency industry insiders and steal bitcoins.
