Microsoft’s TypeScript programming language has seen steady growth in recent years. Now, for the first time, TypeScript has officially entered the list of top 10 programming languages published by RedMonk.

Currently, TypeScript is placed in the 10th position on the list this month. We can expect TypeScript to experience an upward surge in the coming months.

It also marks the second time a different programming language has broken into developer analyst Redmonk’s rankings. The last time it happened was in 2018 when Swift took over the 10th position. As of June 2019, Swift stands at 11th spot.

Most popular programming languages by RedMonk

1. JavaScript
2. Java
3. Python
4. PHP
5. C++ (tie)
5. C# (tie)
7. CSS
8. Ruby
9. C
10. TypeScript

As far as the rest of the languages in the top 10 are concerned, they remain fairly static — with only one change in recent months where C++ has risen one spot to compete with C#.

The journey of TypeScript programming language

Three years ago, TypeScript first appeared on the RedMonk list with 26th position in hand. Ever since then, it has seen constant growth and climbed to no. 12 in the last quarter.

RedMonk analyst Stephen O’Grady says that the popularity of TypeScript can be attributed to the prevalence of JavaScript, combined with the optional safety offered by TypeScript.

“It will be interesting to see if it can sustain this rank, or if like Swift before it, this is a temporary gain,” writes O’Grady in the post. “Either way, TypeScript is a language that many are betting on moving forward.”

For the uninitiated, RedMonk creates the top 10 list by combining the programming language rankings from both GitHub and Stack Overflow to reflect a language’s popularity both in terms of code and discussion.
