At its annual tech summit, the chipset maker Qualcomm, along with the next-gen Snapdragon 855 processor unveiled its new in-display fingerprint scanning tech.

While the whole concept of an under-the-display fingerprint scanner is now an acquaintance, Qualcomm’s tech is based on ultrasonic waves for a little different utility.

Qualcomm has announced the 3D Sonic Sensor which will use ultrasonic waves to capture the 3D cast of the users’ fingers. The new technology will call for a better fingerprint scanning in comparison with the previous under-the-display fingerprint scanning tech.

Additionally, the new fingerprint scanning tech could help in recognizing the fingerprints even when the hands are dirty.

However, other details about the new in-display fingerprint scanning technology are still not revealed by the company.

The new Ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner will be available for commercial use, starting 2019.

For those who have forgotten, early 2018 saw the launch of the World’s first in-display fingerprint scanner by Vivo with the launch of the Vivo X20 Plus UD. Other recent smartphones such as the OnePlus 6T and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro also come with an under-the-display fingerprint scanner.
