The battery range of the Porsche Taycan 4S electric car with a performance battery pack is 203 miles, according to the EPA. However, car reviewer Matt Farah recently tested a brand new Porsche Taycan 4S with the performance battery pack and shattered the EPA estimate range.
His Porsche Taycan 4S delivered a battery range of 294 miles, which is 91 miles more than its EPA estimated range.
Matt Farah drove his car at normal highway speeds of 70 mph with Cruise Control and AC ON while using all the in-car electronics like charging ports to their fullest.
Here’s what happened.
Porsche Taycan Electric Car Range Test Reveals Surprising Results
It is only when you press the brake pedal does the regen braking really kick in.
Throughout the trip, the car’s onboard computer kept showing a conservative estimate for the remaining battery range. At the end of the journey, the Taycan electric car had 18 miles of range left.
If we consider this too as a conservative estimate, the Porsche Taycan would have blown past the 300-mile mark, with its remaining battery range.
The average consumption of the Porsche Taycan 4S was around 29 kWh/100 miles to 33.7 kWh/100 miles. Matt traveled at a speed of 60-70 mph while occasionally slowing down in bumper to bumper traffic.
Matt reiterated that the Porsche Taycan delivers 100% of its performance irrespective of the charge rate. However, we have seen that the performance in the Taycan Turbo S variant does drop a noticeable amount when the State of charge dips 50%.
How Porsche Taycan Achieved The 300-Mile Range?
How Taycan achieved this range has a lot to do with the parts and equipment present in the 4S.
The car being tested here is the Porsche Taycan 4S with a performance pack. This means it is less powerful than the Taycan Turbo version. Porsche Taycan 4S produces 562 HP in boost mode and 482 HP in normal mode along with 479 lb-ft of torque.
In terms of performance equipment, the Taycan 4S uses a combination of a small inverter and a big motor at the front of the car, and small motor and big battery at the back of the car.
The performance pack equips the Taycan 4S electric car with a bigger 93 kWh battery. The combination of a larger battery with less performance lends the car more range.
The Porsche Taycan 4S comes equipped with 19-inch aero wheels that provide the perfect blend of performance and efficiency.
Unlike Tesla, the Porsche Taycan 4S has two gears. The second gear is for giving the electric car a relatively better top end than other EVs.
Furthermore, the regen-braking in the Taycan also works a bit differently in other electric cars. When you lift your foot off the pedal, the electric motor does not slow it down, instead, the Porsche Taycan simply coasts.
Additionally, the biggest reason for this long battery range was cruise control. During the entire journey, the Porsche Taycan 4S maintained a sustained speed. Sudden acceleration and uneven driving speeds deplete the battery charge the most.
In this way, Porsche Taycan achieved such a high battery range.
