Mozilla: Microsoft’s Chromium Shift Will Strengthen Google’s Monopoly

Yesterday, Microsoft made it official that they are bidding bye to EdgeHTML and will redesign a Chromium-based Edge browser. Chromium is an open source web browser project initiated by Google. Microsoft’s shift to Google’s open source platform has been described as bad by Mozilla.

In an official blog post titled, “Goodbye, EdgeHTML,” Mozilla has criticized Microsoft’s decision. The post says that by adopting Chromium, Microsoft is handing over even more control of our online life to Google.

According to Mozilla, “Making Google more powerful is risky on many fronts.” With Microsoft parting ways with EdgeHTML, Google’s Chromium will gain more market share, and it will lead to a situation where web developers and businesses will stop caring about the other platforms.

Mozilla cited Microsoft’s example of enjoying a monopoly on browsers in the early 2000s before Firefox was released. The company behind Firefox browser fears that this time Google would enjoy the monopoly owing to Microsoft’s move towards Chromium.

Opposing Google’s growing dominance, Mozilla said that they compete with the search giant “because the health of the internet and online life depend on competition and choice.”

Google, on the other hand, has welcomed Microsoft’s decision. In a statement to The Verge, a spokesperson said, “We look forward to working with Microsoft and the web standards community to advance the open web, support user choice and deliver great browsing experiences.”
