It is commonly assumed that Wi-Fi connections offer faster downloading speed than mobile networks, but that isn’t necessarily true — as in some countries, using Wi-Fi for downloading can be a pain.

OpenSignal recently conducted a study to analyze downloading speed in different countries. It found that mobile data is faster than Wi-Fi in 33 countries, including several African, European, Latin American and Middle Eastern nations.

What’s more shocking is the massive difference in their downloading speeds. For instance, in Australia, the mobile network offers 13Mbps more than Wi-Fi, and the same is 25Mbps in Lebanon. Other places like Oman and the Czech Republic also give you an advantage of more than 10Mbps.

WiFi vs Mobile Speed

There are other countries where cellular and WiFi links are nearly competitive. But again, WiFi has a clear advantage in countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and the US, where home broadband is relatively faster.

It is quite interesting to see how fast the world of connectivity is changing, especially when 5G is just around the corner.

So, these findings suggest that users need to rethink the assumption that Wi-Fi is always the best option for them. Similarly, device makers and the entire Wi-Fi industry need to speed up their performance or risk facing sliding into irrelevance.
