When it comes to portable computers in the tablet form-factor, there’s no doubt that Apple’s iPad lineup has no competitor. However, it looks like the company’s long-time rival Microsoft is planning to release a low-cost iPad-killer.
As per a report from Bloomberg, Microsoft’s efforts might realize in the second half of 2018. The upcoming device will sport a 10-inch screen. It’s worth noting that it’s the same size as regular iPad but smaller than the bigger 12-inch iPad Pro.
There is an obvious caveat coupled with the lower price point. The $400 device will feature a shorter battery life than iPad Pro, probably by 4 hours. A smaller battery will also help the device achieve a lighter footprint with a 20% lesser weight as compared to iPad Pro.
On the storage front, Redmond will offer the option of 64GB and 128GB storage; Intel will take care of the processor and graphics department. Models with built-in LTE are also expected to arrive.
It goes without saying that Microsoft’s second attempt to turn its low-cost tablets into a reality will be observed with much scrutiny. In the past, Microsoft’s Surface RT devices failed to make an impact and proved to be another sob story, just like company’s Windows Mobile ambitions.
